Leading through the 2020’s

The topic of leadership has probably never been under more scrutiny than in the last 18 months; whether it is how our political leaders have responded to a world that is and has been operating on a health and economic knife edge, or how organisations have reacted to either a meteoric increase in demand or the crumbling of historically safe markets that have sustained sales and profits for generations.

Leadership is not a branch of management. Being a good manager doesn’t make you a good leader and equally being a manager is not a pre-requisite for being a leader. The key traits of leadership are that you have to trust and be trusted by those around you, that you understand your own skills and knowledge gaps, so you can bridge those gaps with the skills of others, and that you are willing to empower others to help you deliver objectives which are aligned to the vision and mission of the organisation.

And there lies another challenge! If you own or run a business, are you clear about what you want to achieve over the next 3 to 5 years? If so, are the team around you clear about where the organisation is heading and what their contribution, and reward, to its success looks like? Do they feel empowered to make suggestions on ways to improve outcomes? As Steve Jobs once said ‘It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.’
